SMALL BOXES

I had built projects for the youngest grandchildren but the older ones had nothing hand built especially for them by their granddad. Needless to say, this was an unacceptable situation. For Christmas 2002, I built four small boxes as their personal treasure chest.

With each box was a poem. While you can judge that my woodworking craft is limited, it is great as compared to my literary talent.

We all need personal places
Some small secure nook
Away from others' faces
For letters from friends or diary book

Some things are for only my eyes
Perhaps a poem I wrote
Maybe a gift or ribbon or prize
Or even a special note

Its not size that is relevant
But that it is only for me
A place I go where others can't
A box made from a sturdy tree

For pictures special to remember
Or anything of the very best
So for Christmas 2002 December
Granddad built my private chest

Boxes were made of poplar. Each grandchild's box was stained and finished in a different color. They also received a small combination lock on which they could choose and set their own combination.

To prove how nice they are, they all said the LOVED them.
